They traveled for one blessed month of quiet, meeting no difficulties, not even the common bandit. Tira remarked more than once on how lucky and/or strange this was.
On the second day of the second month, Sephant shied violently at a roadside bush. Even with his special bond with Tira, it took the latter almost half a sunmark to calm him down. He was still quivering with fear when Tira decided to dismount and investigate.
Emily sat heavily atop her grey mare as Tira walked slowly towards the dense bushes, caution in every step. Isn't Seph an abnormally intelligent horse? Surely he wouldn't spook like an ordinary mount.
Using her long sword, Tira gingerly brushed the bushes aside, noting where it seemed that the underbrush had been recently disturbed. When the branches decided not to yield, as if hiding something, she grew impatient and disintegrated the bushes into ash.
There was a collective gasp from both Emily and Tira. Sephant gave a snort, as if to say 'I told you so.'
